Harlem Wizard “Mighty” Mike Simmel helped 15-year-old Bianca Mathis get the right spin on a basketball during a recent visit to the Matheny Medical and Educational Center. Simmel, a resident of Allendale, has been a member of the Wizards since 2001. He often performs for patients with special needs, he says, because he has been able to overcome epilepsy to play basketball – not only with the Wizards, but in college at Purchase College (SUNY) and in high school at Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey. The mission of the Harlem Wizards is to create a “joyous, awe-inspiring” basketball experience for its fans.
