Sarah Malzberg and her friends at the Old Turnpike School in Califon have never run in a 5K race.  But on Sunday, April 17, they will be participating in their first 5K at the 14th annual Miles for Matheny and then walking over to the finish line of the Lu Huggins Wheelchair Walk to cheer on Matheny students and patients.  The fundraising team, “Sarah’s Mitzvah” was formed by the seventh grader because, “Matheny is really close to our home and community, and we wanted to help people in our community who are not as fortunate as we are.”  The Hebrew term, ‘mitzvah’, signifies an act of human kindness and also was chosen to connect with Sarah’s Bat Mitzvah, scheduled for next month.  In addition to her classmates at Old Turnpike, all Tewksbury residents, Sarah recruited her brother, Ethan, a fourth grader at Tewksbury Elementary School; her parents, Jodelyn and Mitchell Malzberg; and another Tewksbury friend, Kendall Cairoli, a seventh grader at Morristown-Beard School in Morristown.

For more information or to register for Miles for Matheny, log onto www.milesformatheny.org or call (908) 234-0011, ext. 260.  To support Sarah’s Mitzvah, click on ‘search for participant’ and type in the name.  As of April 7, the team had raised $350.
