'Team Mason’ Walkers Hope to Top Last Year’s Total

In 2006, Jeanne May of Bridgewater came up with an idea for raising more money at Miles for Matheny. She created a “Team Mason” page on the Miles for Matheny website and encouraged family, friends and neighbors to walk together in the Lu Huggins Wheelchair Walk to support her son, Mason Walsh, a day student at the Matheny School.
That effort, she says, drew some family members and a few friends, but last year the Team Mason concept literally exploded. “We had 45 to 50 people, all in Team Mason t-shirts,” she reports. “They were friends of our other children, neighbors, relatives and friends of my parents. My sister and brother-in-law came from Washington, DC, some friends came all the way from Toms River and we had cousins from North Jersey. All my family members sent e-mails to their friends, and we raised $4,200. Last year is going to be hard to beat,” she says, “but we’re going to try. It’s a great event. My sister placed in the 5K run, and my brother-in-law did the 50-mile bike ride. Everyone who came had a great time.”
The 11th annual Miles for Matheny will be held Sunday, April 20, in downtown Peapack. The activities include several cycle rides, a 5K run, a kids’ fun run and the Lu Huggins Wheelchair Walk in which more than 100 participants in wheelchairs travel 1.5 miles around downtown Peapack, accompanied by walking partners. The day is concluded with a celebration picnic at Matheny. Funds raised at the event help support Matheny’s outpatient center, which provides much-needed medical, dental and therapy care to people with disabilities in 12 New Jersey counties. Title sponsor for the third consecutive year is sanofi-aventis, one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies whose U.S. corporate headquarters is in Bridgewater.
