Therapy services have always played a central role in Matheny’s medical care and have always been administered as part of a team approach.
Occupational Therapy is a health and rehabilitation therapy that helps people regain, develop and build skills that are important for independent functioning health and well-being. At Matheny, occupational therapists are part of a collaborative team of educators, instructors, other therapists, physicians, nurses and parents. We help develop adaptive skills and assist in improving performance capacity in individuals whose ability to perform life skills is impaired. Our major role is to provide assessment and treatment in the areas of:
Cognitive, motor and psychosocial development.
Activities of daily living.
Assistive technology, including switch access for computers, power wheelchairs and augmentative communication.
Our OTs are not only involved with various research and educational opportunities to further learning, but many of our therapists have advanced training in the area of Neurodevelopmental Treatment (NDT) and Sensor Integration (SIPT). In addition, the occupational therapy department provides consultation to students’ families in order to ensure programmatic carryover, safety and optimal functioning within the individual’s habilitative program.
Physical Therapy provides therapeutic interventions to help patients and students attain their optimal level of function. PTs at Matheny take a personal and client-specific approach to addressing each person’s individual needs. Services may include a neurodevelopmental treatment approach, integrated classroom treatment sessions and supportive services.
Patients may receive services such as gait training, balance training, mobility training and therapeutic exercise. They may also benefit from adaptive tricycle riding, standing and alternate positioning programs developed by physical therapists.
Our PTs play an active role in evaluating the positional and adaptive equipment needs of our patients. They are an integral part of our transdisciplinary team, working closely with our physicians in our specialty clinics and with educators, other therapists and nurses.
Speech Therapy provides comprehensive treatment for patients and students who exhibit speech and language disorders and/or dysphagia involvement. As part of a collaborative team, speech-language pathologists providea complete assessment of speech and language and develop and implement a program to meet each patient’s individual needs. Therapy services are delivered in individual or group sessions or through consultative services with professionals from other disciplines. Speech-language pathologists continually explore various educational and research opportunities in order to expand knowledge.
